Decoupage - Medium Plate | Trainers and Ink

Simply put, decoupage or découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing paper cut-outs onto it in combination with special paint effects, crackle, and other decorative processes.

To bore you briefly with a bit of the making process, Ed applies a white acrylic coat to the object and lets it dry before applying the background colour which is usually a bright or metallic hue. The cut-out image is then glued and dried again. A base coat is painted on and the exciting part is watching it crackle when the top coat is applied – it’s like watching a frozen lake cracking! To make the crackle prominent, a dark highlighter is applied and finally a coat of crystal-clear varnish which pops. From start to finish, the process takes between 5 – 6 hours over 5 days!

The end result is a truly unique and often surprising piece.

Normally an object like a small box or item of furniture is decoupaged with cut-outs.  Ed’s taken a different approach and currently is focussing on plates, trays, table-tops and baubles.  Whatever takes his eye when he’s rummaging in charity shops.

Along with images from kittens to dogs, from Joan to David, from 70’s icons to Gay Pride marchers, Ed’s decoupage covers a wide range of striking, engaging and above all different images.
