A few years ago, we bought a tiny wooden brown bauble bear for our Christmas tree that stands knee-high. When Ed started the pottery sessions, he decided to make a slightly larger (and heavier) version of it. The tail is his favourite bit, closely followed by the unglazed nose!
MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST ...
Coming out of the pandemic, Ed became increasingly interested in ceramics and took up pottery sessions at the Deal Adult Education Centre in Kent to experiment with throwing, slab-building, coiling, pinching and all the other wonderful ways of manipulating clay. He’s still learning bucketloads and continues to be totally obsessed with what is essentially, mud!
The thing Ed hadn’t anticipated is how great pottery makes a person feel! Hours can go by in a blink of an eye and after a session you always feel so energised, carefree, and upbeat.
Some days Ed comes prepared with drawings, measurements and reference pictures for inspiration. Other days, there’s no plan: he starts with a lump of clay and a vague idea, then lets his imagination take over and before he knows it, he’s glazing at this unexpected object about to be put into a the kiln. Hot stuff!
These pieces are slightly quirky, slightly wonky and no two are alike. So if one of them grabs your fancy, bag it quick-sticks before it’s gone!
